An
extraordinary jazz vocalist and conscientious musician, Vanessa Rubin
continues to build her illustrious performance and recording career.
Vanessa's approach to the music involves a strong interpretation of the
lyrics in a song encompassed with the vision of herself as another
instrument. This approach, she explains, fosters a closer
musical relationship between her and the musicians, making more
available the band's abundantly rich harmonic palates upon which she can
carefully phrase and color. "I prefer space in order to let the
music breathe because the music tells the story as much as the lyric. And
I recognize the importance of placement and choice of notes
because they can determine meaning and convey an array of emotions".
A native of Cleveland,
Ohio, Vanessa grew up in a musical household with parents of Trinidadian
and Louisiana descent. The Rubin household was a virtual artistic
center, where the family piano was in constant service. As the
seventh of eight children, she fondly remembers having to wait her turn at
the stereo. "I wanted to play my 45's. I liked
listening to the music of my generation; the Motown groups, James
Brown, Sly and the Family Stone, Gladys Knight & The Pips, The Dells,
The Stylistics etc. But Gene Ammons, Count Basie, Blue Mitchell,
Cannonball, Dexter Gordon, Sparrow, Calypso Rose and many others
always came first because my parents and the older kids had seniority over
me. There was a lot of different kinds of music always being played
as well as some of us taking private music lessons. As far back as I
can remember, music has always been an integral part of my life".
